💍 Gemstone Ring Head Types & Descriptions
1. Prong (Claw) Setting
Description: Uses metal “prongs” (usually 4–6) to grip the gemstone. Classic and timeless, it exposes more of the stone, making it sparkle brightly.
Best for: Round, princess, cushion & other shapes where light return is key.
Look: Elevated with visible metal claws holding the gem.
2. Bezel Setting
Description: The gemstone is surrounded by a metal rim that encircles its edges. Very secure and low-profile.
Best for: Everyday wear or active lifestyles.
Look: Sleek and modern, with smooth metal around the gem.
3. Basket Head (Prong Variation)
Description: Similar to a prong but with a supporting metal basket under the stone that adds strength and allows light to pass through.
Best for: Classic engagement and solitaires.
Look: Gem sits in a “basket” with multiple metal supports.
4. Channel or Bar Accents
Description: Stones (accent or centre) sit between metal “channels” or bars. Very secure with a continuous, elegant look.
Best for: Side stones and accent gems.
Look: Stones flush between two metal walls.
5. Halo Head
Description: A circle of small gemstones surrounds the centre stone to increase visual size and sparkle.
Best for: Gemstones you want to appear larger/brighter.
Look: Centre gem with a “halo” of smaller stones.
6. Tension Setting
Description: The gemstone is held in place by metal pressure, giving it a “floating” appearance.
Best for: Contemporary, bold styles.
Look: Minimal metal with the gem seemingly suspended.
7. Cathedral & Tulip Heads
Description: Sculptural metal arches up from the band to support the stone, adding height and elegance.
Best for: Dramatic, vintage-inspired looks.
Look: The ring head curves upward like an arch or a petal.
📌 Tips for Choosing a Ring Head Style
Visibility & Sparkle: Prong and halo settings showcase the gemstone and allow light to enter for added brilliance.Durability: Bezel and channel settings protect the gemstone better from everyday bumps.
Lifestyle Match: If you use your hands frequently (e.g., at work or in sports), low-profile styles such as bezel or channel styles are often more practical.
